More than 50 percent of students begin their higher education journey at a community college. However, available data shows that students are not realizing the full potential of these educational pathways. Texas is losing an intellectual talent pool, communities are losing economic development opportunities, and families are not moving from poverty to the middle class.

The UT System and its partners seek to increase the number of students transferring from community colleges to four-year institutions. These students are proven to have the capability and motivation needed to succeed as statistics show that students who transfer from a community college to a university are graduating at higher rates than first-time, full-time freshman.

One critical way Transfer101 will facilitate success is by ensuring students have easy access to the information and tools they need to make the transition to a senior institution.

Transfer101 was created by The University of Texas System in partnership with The Texas A&M University System and the Texas Association of Community Colleges.

It draws students from throughout the Greater Houston area. UHD is considered one of the most ethnically diverse liberal arts institutions in the Southwest, a distinction that indicates the student body accurately reflects the Houston community’s wealth of cultures, languages and nationalities. The University offers all students a specially tailored opportunity for quality higher education, as well as small classes and personal interest from faculty.

Since opening in 1974, UHD has grown to offer baccalaureate degrees in 43 areas and four master’s degree programs. Enrollment has surpassed 12,000 students who attend classes in four Colleges: Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Public Service and Sciences and Technology. A fifth college, University College, serves as the entry point for all students coming to UHD.

Here are the criteria for admission to the University of Houston as a transfer student.

Applicants who have completed between 15 and 29 semester hours of college-level credit must have a 2.50 or higher cumulative grade point average*.

Applicants who have completed 30 or more semester hours of college credit must have a 2.00 or higher cumulative grade point average.*

Admission will be granted to applicants who have earned an associate of science or associate of art degree from the last school attended as long as the school is a U.S. regionally accredited school. Official transcripts must be received from all previously attended institutions.

Applicants who are not eligible to return immediately to the last institution attended will not be admitted.

* All grades earned from college-level courses, including repeated courses, are used in computing the grade point average. All colleges attended must be U.S. regionally accredited.

The February 4th deadline to apply for the UH Terry Foundation scholarship is fast approaching.

To those of you who have already forwarded this opportunity to your students, many thanks. If you know of students who have not applied and meet the qualification criteria (see below), please encourage them to apply as soon as possible.

If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. Thanks again for your assistance.

Jodie Köszegi
Assistant Dean
The Honors College at the University of Houston

**********************************************
To: Texas High School Counselors
Please feel free to pass along directly to your students.

From: Jodie Köszegi, Assistant Dean
The Honors College at the University of Houston
Chair, UH Terry Scholarship Nomination Committee

WHAT IS THE TERRY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP?
The Terry Foundation Scholarship is for spring 2011 graduates of Texas high schools who demonstrate scholastic achievement, leadership ability and financial need. The amount of the Terry scholarship is based upon the cost of attendance, including tuition, fees, books, on-campus room and board and miscellaneous expenses. Incoming 2010 Terry Scholars received awards ranging from $4,000 to $12,000 for the 2010-2011 academic year.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE TERRY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP?
The Terry Foundation scholarship is a private Houston-based scholarship program founded to provide scholarships to outstanding Texas high school graduates for attendance at Texas public colleges and universities, including the University of Houston. The amount of the Terry scholarship is based upon the cost of attendance, including tuition, fees, books, on-campus room and board and miscellaneous expenses. The actual specific amount of the stipend will vary for each Terry Scholar, depending on other scholarship awards and the ability of the Scholar’s family to contribute to the cost of college.

Students nominated to the Foundation last year possessed an average SAT of 1200 (combined math and critical reading) and were ranked in the top 10% of their graduating classes. Ninety percent of the students nominated attended public high schools and were entering the University in majors ranging from the humanities and business to science, engineering and architecture.

HOW TO APPLY
The UH Terry Scholarship committee at the University of Houston seeks strong candidates to nominate to the Foundation for interviews. Last year, the Committee reviewed 120+ applications from students all over Texas and nominated 32 candidates, 16 of which were eventually chosen as UH Terry Scholars. The guidelines and application for this year’s Terry Foundation Scholarship at the University of Houston are available on the Honors College website at http://www.uh.edu/honors/prospective-students/paying-college/terry-foundation-scholarship/index.php.

DEADLINE TO APPLY
Please encourage your qualified students to submit their completed Terry application, together with the supporting materials at their earliest opportunity, but no later than February 4, 2011. All applications sent via U.S. mail must be postmarked no later than February 3, 2011.

Please feel free to contact me directly with additional questions you might have about the University of Houston or our scholarship opportunities for incoming freshmen.
