Houston Community College Northeast is partnering with the National Center for Optics and Photonics Education (OP-TEC) to offer a new Photonics workforce program that will be infused into the Electronics Engineering Technology AAS degree. Photonics involves cutting-edge uses of lasers, optics, fiber-optics, and electro-optical devices in numerous and diverse fields of technology—alternate energy, manufacturing, health care, telecommunications, environmental monitoring, homeland security, aerospace, solid-state lighting, and many others. Residents of the Houston Community College Northeast service area gathered with students, staff and faculty on Wednesday, April 24 at the Northline Campus in a community dialogue led by District I Trustee Yolanda Navarro Flores and HCC Northeast President Dr. Margaret Ford Fisher about the future of education and facilities at Northeast College. In the update, information was presented on course offerings, future career programs, planned facilities and student success. HCC Northeast science programs win in STEM poster competition
The Houston Community College Northeast natural science and biotechnology programs participated in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) poster competition at the HCC 2013 Chancellor’s Symposium held on April 12. The HCC Northeast natural science department placed first in the competition with a poster presentation that focused on the removal of toxic metal ions from drinking water using orange peels and tea bags.
