HCC No. 1 in Texas for awarding associate degrees

Community College Week issued its Top 100 Associate Degree Producers list, an annual analysis of the top associate degree-awarding institutions in the nation, and Houston Community College is number one in Texas. Coming in at number eight on the list, HCC ranked the highest locally and second-highest in the United States for two-year institutions.

The report examined associate degrees and certificates conferred during the 2010-2011 academic year by two-year and four-year institutions. HCC awarded 3,606 associate degrees for the year, up from 3,285 associate degrees awarded the previous year.

According to the Community College Week report, associate degrees awarded across the nation increased a record 11.1 percent between the 2009-2010 school year and the 2010-2011 year.

In May, Diverse: Issues In Higher Education singled out the Top 100 Degree Producers by rankings for students of color. This year, HCC made the Top 10 list in four categories.

Across all disciplines, HCC is eighth in conferring associate degrees to Asian-Americans, ninth in associate degrees awarded to African Americans and 10th in conferring associate degrees to Hispanics. Overall, HCC ranks eighth in awarding associate degrees to minority students.
