Rashid Albader, senior administrator for the Supreme Education Council (SEC) for the Ministry of Education of Qatar was on hand to present this award to Gigi Do.

Through a HCC partnership with Riyadh Community College, the HCC team provided consultation for RCC to obtain these two prestigious accreditations.

On June 2012, King Saud University Rector, Dr. Abdallah bin Abdulrahman Al-Othman praised Riyadh Community College for being the first college at King Saud University to obtain international academic accreditation from the USA-based COE.

Students from Houston Community College met with other Community College Consortium students from January 3-9, in Phoenix, Arizona.

“This was the first time that all the consortium students met each other and it was also the first time for the new coordinators to meet the rest of the team. The group consisted of 79 students and eight program coordinators”. — Gigi Do

Executive Director Gigi Do also said “the scope of the retreat was to have the students “Refresh, Reflect, and Refocus”. During the retreat students enjoyed the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell resort, Antolope Canyon, and the Lowell Observatory. The trip involved seminars and workshops, team building activities and networking opportunities”.

Each student cooked a meal from their respective countries and served the food to the group. The students invited the staff from the Office of International Initiatives.

Students shared how they celebrate end of the year holidays in their countries and they were also introduced to the way the holidays are celebrated in the US. At the end of the pot luck, students participated in a gift exchange with one another.

According to Gigi Do, students have completed their first HCC semester, and are now taking a holiday break before going to a State Department sponsored retreat in Phoenix, Ariz., in January 2013.

The ceremony took place at the Julia Ideson Building at 550 McKinney St. at 5:00 pm, Wednesday Dec. 12, 2012. Dr. Romero and Mr. Ngang (both of Salzburg Global Seminar alumni and HCC Ambassadors) attended the event at the invitation of the Executive Director of OII Gigi Do who could not make it, but was scheduled to attend a dinner in honor of H.E. Dr. Khalaf Abdul-Samad Khalaf, Governor of Basra Province the next day Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012.

The reception was catered with a rich supply of Middle Eastern food and the DJ on hand (a Houstonian of Iraqi descent) supplied the music, a blend of Middle Eastern and hip-hop music.

The HCC interns worked online and in Brazil with Brazilian high school students who are studying to enter technical fields and needed help to learn English. This program creates opportunities for US community college student to work as interns, seeing Brazil first-hand.
