The six of us met again today to discuss our readings. Our discussion went really well. We only got through one packet. I got to learn more about the other 5 and I understand now why we were all selected. Erica with her work in Latin American helping to build houses and to help those less fortunate, Noelle with her multicultural understanding and outreach, Matthew with his epiphany and awakening to the multicultural society that is Houston, and Jonette who had the curiosity to look outside the wall on her vacation to Jamaica and see the poverty and that things needed to change. I know my vague description does not do them justice; I am really glad to be with such an informed group! (Thanks Guys!)

We read Global Citizenship in Theory and Practice by Hans Schattle. We discussed what the term cosmopolitan means and our individual visions of the word. The idea of global citizenship is pretty much what the name implies: everyone being a common citizen of the world under a unified justice system/governing world body. If only it were that simple. There is so much standing in the way of unity such as world hunger, the Anti-Globalization Movement, lack of dedicated resources, nations not wanting to sacrifice power/wealth, and much, much more.

Last semester I took a class called Global Issues and Social Change (Which is a rare offering at HCC). I specifically wrote my paper on over population, and one of my main arguments was that we would eventually reach our carrying capacity and not have enough food to go around; as a result of lack of food, people would become malnourished and more prone to sickness and begin to naturally die out until sustainable levels can again be reached. Why is this important? The importance is that we have yet to reach our carrying capacity and we have people all over the world even in America going without a meal. We have more than enough food on the planet to feel everyone, so why are people going hungry?

We discussed the abuse of international corporations who go to less developed, poorer nations to log their forest,or to mine their minerals and they tear up the area and leave it as a barren wasteland that can take possibly 1,000 years to recover. This is just not a tree-hugging message but a message of looking out for those more vulnerable than us. The corporations take advantage of these people and leave them with possibly no money and no resources to help build up their worth.

We talked about much more but these were some of my points of interest. I was surprised how much this article got my mind moving. Than you Dr. Speer as well for moderating the discussion and helping to bring these ideas and more out of the group. I am looking forward to next week!

I have published scientific articles and books in the fields of relativistic astrophysics, gravitational radiation, optical fiber sensors, optical properties of superconducting / semiconducting materials, spectroscopic instrumentation design, and adaptive optics instrumentation for ophthalmoscopy.

During the last 12 years, I have been teaching physics at HCC-Central and I am interested in global issues, for our student population is very diverse. After my second round of applicacions, I have been fortunate to be selected by my peers to attend this summer of 2012 the Salzburg Global Seminar. This is not only a unique professional development activity overseas at a magnificent venue, but it definitely broadens our view of how to modify our teaching approaches toward an everyday more global student population and world. I, therefore, encourage every fellow faculty colleague to pursue this opportunity that the Office of International Initiatives offers every year. Ms. Do and Ms. Rivera are very helpful and encourage students and faculty to participate. Thanks.-

Finals are approaching this next week. So this week will be studying and re-reading Global Citizenship in Theory and Practice.

We have a set of readings we must complete so we can become more rounded on historical issues and globalization. There are some interesting readings set for us and one I recommend is an essay called “The World House” by Martin Luther King Jr. I suggest everyone read it. It’s only a Google away. Good Luck on finals everyone!
