Sustainability and Recycling: Our Mission

The mission of the C&G Committee is threefold:

  • Promote more energy efficiency throughout the college system by developing sustainable green projects.
  • Expose our students to potential green jobs
  • Work with existing groups and create new partnerships to minimize negative impacts on the environment.

Our Vision

Houston Community College (HCC) seeks to model ways to eliminate carbon emissions and to educate students and graduates in methods to achieve climate neutrality. HCC is a signatory of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

History

Started in the summer of 2009, the Clean and Green (C&G) Committee serves as an advisory group to the Chancellor. Along with relevant stakeholders, the C&G Committee develops recommendations that support HCC’s commitment as an ACUPCC signatory and promotes the mission of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE): “to empower higher education to lead the sustainability transformation.” In this effort, it has submitted a climate action plan to AASHE that provides a blueprint for our ongoing sustainability efforts and will implement a system-wide recycling program.

Paperless Initiatives supported through Information Technology also reduce HCC’s use of paper. Complete details.
From Human Resources: Applications in Payroll, Training, and Time and Labor, to electronic grade sheets and trans-scripting … the reduction in the use of paper saves measurable environmental resources. Since 2008 an estimated 2,158,316 sheets of paper, 259 trees, 179 print heads and 60 print drums were saved through these efforts.
