Saturday May 12th marked the end of a short journey that began in 2004, but wasn’t serious enough until 2010, HCC made it easy to go to college through distance education classes and scholarships, I graduated with honors, I go to nursing school right now, and I couldn’t be more proud of myself, THANK YOU HCC, and may many more students benefit from all the great things HCC has to offer.

I graduated from high school in 1983. I lacked direction and purpose in life and so was unsuccessful in college. After settling on a career in the mortgage and banking industry I decided to return to school in 2010. That first semester was very intimidating for me..I had no idea what to expect. I am happy to say that since returning to school I have been very successful and am extremely proud to receive my Associate of Arts degree. I am so very proud of my accomplishments and myself!

I graduated High School in 1981 as an honor student and went to community college in Dallas right after. I enrolled in college many times over the years and dropped out. It wasn’t easy for me to succeed without support from home and a dramatic home life. I don’t believe i would have graduated if i hadn’t gone to HCC. I spent all of my adult life spinning my wheels trying to figure out what to do after many falls.I believe this was the time and HCC was the place for my success.

I graduated high school back in 1994. Immediately, I began my college journey at Sam Houston State University. I was going to be the first in my family to get a degree. After two years at SHSU, I dropped out of school with a promise to return. Fourteen years later, I needed a new beginning. HCC-Central opened that door for me to complete my education. Now with two associate’s degrees, I will continue my journey at the University of Houston!

    Commit to Complete!!!!

HCC gave me the opportunity to pursue education at an affordable and user friendly level. I have graduated with highest honors with a AAS degree in Mental Health. I learned about many hidden talents for reading, writing, and determination that remain dormant in me until I decided to pursue my education. I am a re-entry level student going back at 40 to get the education I denied myself at a younger age. The professors, educators, students, and others showed me accountability and citizenship.

I began taking classes at HCC at the end of 2009. I took class in the Fall, Spring and Summer until I graduated Saturday – Summa Cum Laude. I have a tremendously busy schedule being a married mother of four children. HCC’s distance education program made it convenient for me to continue to take care of my priorities and obtain my education. Thank you HCC!

wow!! I am so proud of myself beyond words. These last 2 years have been hard but well worth the struggle. I am living proof of what can happen if you stop thinking you cant and just believe..you can achieve. YES i did it with 2 kids and a full time job. Much thanks to the person who thought of Distance Ed. I’m sad to leave HCC but excited to be on my way to my second degree. I walked across that stage with so much pride in my heart, barely able to contain the tears. you can do it…because I DID

Hcc makes going to school easy for both new comers and the drop outs. Therefore, financial and schedule issues should not be a reason not to be educated and have a very comfortable career for oneself instead of resentfully struggling with how to pay bills.

A survivor of domestic violance, I came from a background of generationally uneducated women. But with the help of The Houston Area Women’s Cener & the TRiO SSSP Dept. I have my life back, I am educated and I have a future. You must be active in YOUR education. No one can do it for you! You are responsible for YOUR own education. Today, I felt the wells of my eyelids fill up as I started up the ramp to recieve an Associates of Arts from HCC Central w/ Honors! UHCL here I come!

My graduation will be on May 12, 2012. HCC has been a great experience for me in my learning tools while taking online classes. I was a honor roll student until I decided to take an instructor who had his picks, and made my grade point average low, but yet I kept on pressing for excellent. When you find instructors who dont care about the student, dont give up, just move on. I ‘m just so happy to have taken online classes at HCC. My instructors we so good.

I dropped of TSU in ’07 but HCC made is so easy for me to not only come back but thrive and succeed. The Distance Education program CANNOT be matched, its what helped me make it though this while working a full time job and being a full time mom! Its hard to leave such a nurturing program but HCC has softly handed me off to UHD! 2 more years!

After graduating from high school in 2000, I dedided that i would attend college at HCC. Unfortunately, I didn’t get very far because I decided to start a family. After, many years of dedication as a teacher assistant I decided I had to earn my degree and become a “certified teacher.” In 2009 I made up my mind to continue my education. My experience at HCC has been great!! The teachers are knowledgeble and caring. I am so excited that I will finally recieve my AA and then transfer to U of H.

After I lost my son in 2009, rather than lay in bed and weep all day I decided to turn my pain into something good and got enrolled at HCC. Two years later, despite family struggles, I’m proud to stand and shout, “I did id!” It’s been a wonderful and rewarding experience. I plan on starting my bachelors degree immediately. Thank you HCC. To all those out there that are dealing with one thing or the other, I employ you to be steadfast. Hang in there, do your best and you will be rewarded.

It didn’t seem right to preach to my kids about going to and finishing college if I hadn’t done it myself so after more than 10 yrs away I reenrolled into school and in a years time earned my AofA. This is the first of manydegree’s to come. Next a BS in Criminal Justice and then on to law school. I appreciate HCC making it affordable and accessible for working students who have more than school to worry about.

I started HCC in fall 2005 right after graduating from High School. I loved the small classes and the professors. I was as HCC for 2.5 years and then I transferred to a University to get my B.S in Geography. But HCC was not only there for my education, during my first semester I met the love of my life and now after six wonderful years later we are getting married. Thank you HCC for your wonderful education and for “playing” match making.

I have been in and out of HCC since 2008. Gained valuable experience in the Veterinary Paramedic Program to now majoring in Petroleum Engineering. HCC is like a second family to me. Everyone there strives to make sure I attain my goal of a higher education with so many scholarship opportunities! Despite being out a few semesters due to a brain tumor, I am always welcomed with open arms and supportive staff! I love HCC!!

I recently took Introduction to Humanities from Dr. Deanne Schlanger. What an awesome class and professor. My most memorable moment in this class was our discussion on Slavery, Jim Crow laws, and the many horrible events around segregation. These topics have always been uncomfortable for me to discuss openly, especially in a diverse group setting. But, Dr. Schlanger, created a mature and learning focused environment for all.

I have learned that teachers are the normal people on the planet, from a core source, basic direction in life…kind of way. I’m glad you all became teachers, added to the school system, and gave us all something to think about in regard to the possibilities that life has to offer us an individuals in the world’s work force.

HCC is hands down the best community college ever. Next year I will be getting my associates and I’ve learned so much. Not only about my career plan but about life in general the counselors at Northline and Pinemont are the absolute best. Although some courses are a challenge you walk away with a full understanding of every subject matter. Thanks HCC congrats on 40yrs.

Houston Community College is a great college and second to none. I graduated from HCC in January ’74 with a Certificate of Completion in Vocational Nursing. The education that I received at HCC enabled me to complete my undergraduate degree without a student loan. The knowledge, skills, and abilities that I obtained during my student days at HCC have been enduring. I am currently, Professor, ADN Nursing Program, HCC-Coleman College.

In September 1972, I started attending HCC at the Waltrip High School campus. I was encouraged and learned a lot from my instructors. However, life changed and I married and moved in 1974. In 1978, I finally completed my A.S. degree in Business Administration. After 30 years, I made a commitment to finish my education and I completed my B.S. degree and my Master’s degree. I am now able to give back and make a difference in students’ lives, as an instructor at HCC almost 40 years later.

There is always something new to learn at HCC. Whether it be the changing curriculum, the faculty’s way of instructing the class, or the museums and advertisements around the campus; you can ALWAYS find what you want and need to learn right at your fingertips! I’ve had the best learning experience I think I can possibly get by starting college at HCC. My professors really care that we as students grasp the material as well as enjoy the learning experience! That’s what school is about!

I was at the office of Veteran Affairs when I noticed how friendly and polite the staff was. I felt really comfortable with the environment they had in place that I decided to ask if they were hiring. I started out as work study. After six months in that position I applied for a part-time position which is the position I have held for the past year and a half. The VA staff and online student services has been like a part of my family, my extended family. I really love my job.

After graduating from college, I was looking for a job and realized that no one was hiring due to the Sept. 11 tragedy. I landed a part-time job at HCC Southeast in our Job Placement Office. One day, a young lady came back to me and said… “Mr. Garza… I graduated, first in my family to go to college. I am going to UH now. I just wanted to say thank you. You helped me get there!” She gave me a pen that lit up that I still have today. At that exact moment, I fell in love with our student.

Hello everyone, I am so grateful for HCC, being a student an a employee. School is so wonderful, all the faculty is very teacher/student friendly, student like myself can learn. Working at HCC, is very rewarding, starting out as an student worker, and now working as a full time employee, everyone is very joyful to work with. The job I’m working in is something I wanted to do, since retiring from the US Army. I would like to tell everyone here at HCC, thank you, thank you, thank you, and Be Bless

I started as a work-student 3 years ago in admissions. Pretty excited about the new college environment. Then, I got transferred to the ISSO as a partime, and soon after as a fulltime employee. I graduated from HCCS with Honors, and very comfortable with work environment. After that, a quite interesting opportunity came up, and I had a new job opportunity. However, l realized the new employer was not a good fit for me, and the work environment was horrible. So, I decided to came back to HCCS!!!

I was not the best student in High School. In fact I was one of the worst students, graduating at the bottom of my class. I had no college prospects, but at the end of my junior year HCC announced that they would be bringing college option classes to my high school starting the next year. With encouragement from Cindy Renfro, I enrolled in a Dr. Betsy Crowe’s History class, and did great. I gave college a chance, made the Honor Roll, and earned a full scholarship to UT Austin. Thanks HCC!

I began my journey at HCC in the Fall of 2007 after I graduated high school. It was my goal to obtain my Associates in Applied Science in Graphic Design Specialization. Four-years later, a four-year scholarship recipient from the HCC Foundation, and privileged to have interned in the Communications department, I achieved my goal to graduate and to have been hired by HCC as a graphic designer. I’m so grateful for all of the opportunities that have come my way. Thank you!

There is always something that will surprise you at HCC. A few years ago, one of my students stood up in front of the class and pretended she was Mrs. Endrinal but mimicked the style and gestures of Judge Judy. She said I remind her of Judge Judy because I am tough….. but funny. We all had a good laugh. Since then, I was always careful because she was not the only one who thinks I talk and behave like Judge Judy. So, I told them, “well, be careful there is a judge in the room!”

    Thank you.

I enrolled at HCC in June 2005 and graduated in May 2007 with an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Business Technology. This accomplishment was not achieved easily. With hard work, perseverance, HCC’s dedicated counselors and a knowledge-based faculty support team, I was able to follow through with my goals. It is so important to get to know your instructors and for them to get to know you and your ambitions. Because I shared my goals, support from HCC’s faculty did not stop after graduation. I was encouraged to continue my education…to go as far as I can go. I completed my baccalaureate degree in 2010 and my master’s degree in 2011.

I enrolled in August 2005 and 6 years later managed to graduate with an AA degree. It took me 6 years because I could only afford a couple of classes per semester but I never gave up. I plan to stay in school until I become an attorney…..
